ABUNDÀNCIA

2022
Abundància is an aged wine, made in the typical style of the Priorat region. It remains for 12 months in used, French oak casks. A blend of 60% garnatxa and 40% carinyena, from vineyards that are more than 90 years old. It completes its aging in bottle.

2021
Single vineyard garnatxa blanca aged on lees. The vineyard is over 125 years old and was planted in 1897; one of the first vineyards planted after phylloxera hit Catalonia. This wine is aged in stainless steel and is therefore a pure expression of the terroir and the old vines.

Flvminis

2022
Flvminis is shaped by blending Garnatxa, Carinyena, and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged in French oak casks for approximately 6 months.
HeMa

HeMa

2023
It’s a nouveau wine, an explosion of red fruits. It’s primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, along with a blend of Garnatxa, Carinyena, and a little bit of Syrah.

2023
Navili is a young, fresh rosé made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vineyard

What makes us different?

Soil: licorella, clay, and granite sand.

On the border of two prestigious wine regions, the estate benefits from a mix of classic licorella soil typical of DOQ Priorat as well as the chalky clay and granite sand of DO Montsant. This variety provides a wealth of characteristics that we strive to showcase in our wines.

The predominant vineyards of the estate are north to northwest facing, sitting in a valley overlooking the Siruana River. The exposure, valley, and river create the perfect microclimate to yield high quality grapes, even during dry years. All of our vineyards are farmed using sustainable practices and we are striving to be organic certified by 2026.

Winery

A careful process, from vine to bottle.

The trajectory of the winery begins in 2002 and represents the beginning of an enthusiastic effort that results in these very special wines. The creation of our wines is carried out in a totally artisanal way, from the selection and collection of the grapes, to the crafting of the wine itself.

The winery belongs to the Montsant Designation of Origin, right on the border of its big brother, DOQ Priorat. The vineyards have a limited production capacity that is distributed between the wines of the estate.

While most of our vineyards are now at least 25-35 years old, our single vineyard Garnatxa Blanca (de Calpino) exceeds 125 years. We are also expanding and planting brand new vines each year. We grow varietals that are typical of the region, like Garnatxa, Carinyena, and Garnatxa Blanca, as well as regional rarities like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

The cellar contains a rotating cast of French oak barrels, hand crafted in Bordeaux, allowing us to age 5,000 liters of wine.

Experience from Around the World

Mas de l'Abundància welcomed Edouard Chevalier to the family in 2024. Edouard, born just south of Burgundy, spent his training years at prestigious wineries in Australia before being offered a position in Spain where he has been making wines for the last 12+ years, in Priorat, Montsant, and Penedes.

Edouard brings with him a passion for perfection and his experience in both the Old World and New World ways of making wines is perfectly aligned with the vision of Mas de l'Abundància.

We are excited for the future with Edouard driving our wine program.

Our

History

The Story of Mas de l'Abundància

Mas de l’Abundància is located in the prestigous wine region of Priorat, in Tarragona, Spain, and belongs to D.O. Montsant. Until the disentailment, in the 1830s, the land was the property of the Prior of Scala Dei (you can still find three magnificent boundary markers built in the 1790s throughout the estate). Before this time, the land had belonged to the Dukes of Cardona and Entenza, who gave it to the Prior on the 27th January of 1727. It always was a self-sufficient country estate, planted with vines, olive trees and a vegetable garden for its own subsistence.

The estate owes its name, since the 15th century, to the excellent geographical location and to the quantity and quality of its products. It has its own spring water and is located between the Siurana River and the old village of Les Pinyeres, a place of country worship, where from immemorial times the virgin of the same name is revered.

In 2002, Jesus del Rio Mateu presented Mas de l'Abundància to the world, and very quickly received several awards for the spectacular wines produced by the estate. Jesus painstakingly cared for the land and crafted wonderful wines for over 20 years.

In 2024, Ryan Vanderpol and Nikki Katsutani purchased the winery and its vineyards from Jesus with the dream of continuing the traditions of this special land of abundance.

Today, we are hard at work modernizing our process, planting new vineyards, and crafting new artisanal wines.

As the current gardeners of this land, we aim to honor the history and traditions of those who came before us, lifting up the Old World while imparting the energy of the New World.
