Red Wine

Samsó de Philip

2018

A 100% Carinyena version of our flagship wine, made from a single vineyard that was planted in 1941. We don't produce this wine every year; only when the conditions are good enough to highlight the amazing qualities of Carinyena from this plot.

In Catalan, Carinyena is now the most common way to refer to this varietal, but when these vines were planted 80+ years ago it was referred to as Samsó.

Appearance

A dense brownish red with a slightly garnet rim.

Aroma

Earthy notes with an underlying musty cellar that is unmistakably Carinyena.

Palate

Dark black fruits sit alongside an earthy forest floor.

Vineyard Information

Samsó de Philip comes from a single, east-facing vineyard we call Clos de Philip. The Carinyena in this vineyard was planted in 1941 by the late Philip Hastings Lay. Philip and Jesús del Rio Mateu were longtime friends and we honor their relationship by naming this vineyard and the wines produced from it in his name.
